Everything You Need to Know About Statement Of Purpose

    As the name implies, writing a statement of purpose requires you to state your ‘purpose’ and ‘motivation ‘ behind your post graduate studies application. The more convinced you are about why you are been part of a specific programs, the more persuasive you will be while writing your Statement of Purpose.

    There are two aspects of the application process.

    • Quantitative aspect
      • Qualitative aspect

      The Quantitative party is your Academic performance judging from your results while the Qualitative is about you as an individual. The Admission Committee gets to me you first through your statement of purpose, essays, recommendation etc. so it’s important to put your best foot forward, convince them as much as you can.

      Statement of Purpose puts you in the spotlight and helps you stand out. It’s pertinent to understand that the admission committee are experts and seasoned people who know their job, so as much as you can keep it original and engaging so that they see how unique and good you are.

      In this article, we will talk about 4 steps to write a standard Statement Of Purpose (SOP) that helps you get higher chances of acceptances by your supervisors and employers.

      Look at these four major steps you need to keep in mind when writing your SOP:

      1. Understand the Reason for the SOP

      Knowing the weight of an SOP and its objective is very important, because it gives the hiring managers and the admission committee an understanding of what your goal, reasons for applying for the program or job is; your qualifications and communications skills. It helps them to understand your person and motivations.

      2. Make Solid findings on the Program and Job Position.

      Adequate research to understand the requirements, skills and expectations will help you know how to direct your Statement of Purpose to meet their needs and intentions. A lot of schools and recruiters have expectation that needs to be met on the job while they supervise or teach you, so it’s important to understand and know their expectation(s) as this will help you to write an SOP to meet their needs that is in line with your goal.

      3. Draft and write your SOP

      Make a sketch of your thoughts, achievements, qualifications, backgrounds and why you are reaching out. Begin with introduction which talks about an overview of your background, qualifications, reasons for applying and then go on to give detailed information, experiences, intentions, relevant information about the position or program.

      It’s also pertinent to note that you give a summary of your qualifications and why you are the right fit for the position. While writing do it in clear terms, USE SIMPLE TERMS. Be very honest, don’t exaggerate, be truthful with yourself and what you represent.

      One key thing to focus on is using examples to show and explain how your qualifications and goals align with theirs (position or program).

      Proofreading is essential to ensure that grammatical and punctuation errors are not there. It’s critical to check what you’ve written. Re-analyzing will help correct the flow, vocabulary, sentence creation errors, long sentences and different grammar issues. Get a second opinion, may be from your professor, senior or counsellor. Make sure you proofread properly and double check before submission.

      4. Send your Statement of Purpose properly

      Ensure that you follow all the instructions provided without missing out on any. Some program or position requires online submission while others want it as a physical package, PLEASE FOLLOW ALL STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.

      I am writing to express my substantial interest in the Masters of French language at University of Regina as I am assured that my academic background, professional experience, and passion for the field make me a strong candidate for the program.

      I received my Bachelor’s degree in French language at the Afe Babalola University, Ekiti State, one of the best schools in Nigeria. During my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong foundation in translation and interpreting, French literature, history and modern-day affairs. I also had the opportunity to work on various projects, from translating analyzing the books of prominent authors that has helped students and French enthusiasts in their quest to learn more about the culture, writing styles of a lot of authors, which has given me hands-on experience in applying analysis and translating styles to real-world problems.

      Immediately after completing my Bachelor’s degree, I worked as a translator and analyst at ABQ Company, where I was involved in analysis of books, articles, poems, poetry , movies and films for people ,This experience not only gave me valuable practical skills, but also exposed me to the challenges and opportunities in French language from their beautiful culture to their style of living, their mentality and responsiveness. It further reinforced my desires to pursue advanced studies in French language.

      I am particularly drawn to the Masters at the University of Regina because of its reputation for excellence in French culture, analysis, interpreting and French literature especially for the in-depth teaching that the school is known for.

      I am excited about the opportunity to work with renowned faculty members and to collaborate with students from diverse backgrounds. I am particularly interested in French literature, and I am confident that the program will provide me with the skills and knowledge to make significant contributions in these areas.
